Dick and Franny kick off Euro campaign

An eye-catching campaign aimed at football fans in Weston-super-Mare has been launched in the run-up to Euro 2016 which starts on Friday (10 June) in France.

North Somerset Council’s community safety team has again teamed up with partners to run the “Dick and Franny” campaign in a bid to make supporters think about their behaviour during the month-long tournament.

The campaign features two characters – Richard and Francesca – in different situations reflecting the most common problems people cause or encounter when out drinking.

Posters are being distributed to pubs and clubs in Weston town centre this week, complemented by a targeted social media campaign featuring images and messages designed to have an impact even when someone has started to feel the effects of alcohol.

The images of Richard and Francesca used in the campaign feature the message “Cheer loudly, drink responsibly” and the sign-off “Don’t be a Dick” or “Don’t be a Franny”.

“The aim of the campaign is to grab the attention of young drinkers who will be out watching the football in Weston’s pubs and clubs during the tournament,” said Cllr Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for community safety.

“We want people to enjoy themselves supporting their team, but we don’t want drink to ruin their or anyone else’s fun.

“This campaign is aimed at the minority who have a few too many and who then start to cause problems, either for themselves or others. We hope it will get them to think twice before they do something they will probably regret when they’ve sobered up.”

The campaign is one element in a programme of joint initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder in Weston town centre.

These initiatives resulted in the town being awarded the prestigious Purple Flag earlier this year for its evening and night-time economy. Towns achieving Purple Flag status are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of night-time entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.
